On Monday, 29th of August 2016, Trinity Care Foundation conducted a Free Facial Deformities and Cleft lip palate Camp in association with National Health Mission and Government of Karnataka at the District Hospital, Ballari District, Karnataka.. This medical camp aimed at identifying patients from the region with facial deformities who required surgical procedures to rectify them.

Trinity Care Foundation is providing Free Surgeries for Poor { Children and Young Adults } with Facial Deformities ! We had identified 27 Children in the Ballari Camp and are in the process of treating them.

Trinity Care Foundation conducted this Health Camp for identifying Needy and Poor { Children and Young Adults } with Facial Deformities in Koppal district and Providing them Surgical Treatments Free of Cost at different hospitals in Hyderabad and Bangalore, India.

Free Cleft Lip Surgery Karnataka

A cleft lip (CL) is a separation in the upper lip. A cleft palate (CP) is an opening in the roof of the mouth. Clefts result from incomplete development of the lip and/or palate in the early weeks of pregnancy. During this time the face is being formed – the top and the two sides develop at the same time and grow towards each other, finally fusing in the middle. The lip and primary palate develop at 4 to 6 weeks of gestation, while the secondary palate develops at approximately nine weeks.

What can be done ?

Cleft lip and cleft palate are correctable birth defects. Treatment of cleft begins within months of birth with corrective surgery, and continues in one form or another until the person reaches their late teens.

Primary surgery begins with the lip repair at about 3 or 4 months and palate repair between 6 and 12 months. Cosmetic surgery on the nose may occur before the child attends school. A corrective rhinoplasty may be performed on the nose in the teenage years. Orthodontic surgery begins with maxilla expansion at around 9 to 10 years followed by bone grafting. Further corrective surgery (an osteotomy) may be carried out at about 18 years.

Trinity Care Foundation and National Health Mission sign MoU

Trinity Care Foundation and National Health Mission, Karnataka recently signed an MoU to provide free facial deformities surgery to the children.

Free Facial Deformities surgery will be provided in Mallige Medical Centre, Bengaluru such as Cleft lip, Cleft palate, Ear deformities, Facial clefts, Facial vascular lesions, Malformed face and jawbones, Hemi-facial Microsomia , Nasal clefts & Nasal deformities, Tmj Ankylosis and Pediatric benign oral tumours.

Under the partnership, Child Health officials from 6 districts of Ramanagara, Bangalore Rural, Kolar, Chikkaballapura, Tumakuru and Chitradurga in Karnataka will direct children born with facial deformities to Trinity Care Foundation partner hospitals in Bengaluru. Prof. Dr.N. Srinath, Oral & Faciomaxillary surgeon of Trinity Care Foundation will be heading the Project. Trinity Care Foundation will also take responsibility of post-operative care to the children.

The MoU was signed by Dr. H C Ramesh, Project Director (NHM) and Dr. Tony Verghese Thomas (Director Trinity Care Foundation), in the presence of  Dr. Arif Baig ( Consultant ), Dr. Prabhudeba Gowda (State Nodal Officer) and Mr. Binu Varghese (Director Trinity Care Foundation)

At the time of signing the MoU, Mr. Binu Verghese (Director Trinity Care Foundation) , said: ” Trinity Care Foundation has performed many Facial Deformities correction surgeries for the needy patients in this current year, however, our goal is to help transform smiles & lives of many more young people this year who are in dire need of medical intervention with the help of network of the State health teams and anganwadi workers at the grassroots level .”

Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate

A cleft lip is a physical split or separation of the two sides of the upper lip and appears as a narrow opening or gap in the skin of the upper lip. This separation often extends beyond the base of the nose and includes the bones of the upper jaw and/or upper gum.

A cleft palate is a split or opening in the roof of the mouth. A cleft palate can involve the hard palate (the bony front portion of the roof of the mouth), and/or the soft palate (the soft back portion of the roof of the mouth).

Cleft lip and cleft palate can occur on one or both sides of the mouth. Because the lip and the palate develop separately, it is possible to have a cleft lip without a cleft palate, a cleft palate without a cleft lip, or both together.

Free Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate Camp Karnataka

On the 29th of November 2014,  Trinity Care Foundation conducted a Free Cleft Camp in the government hospital in Gubbi Taluk, Tumakuru District, Karnataka. This medical camp aimed at identifying patients from the region with facial deformities who required Surgical procedures to rectify them.

The Organization worked in conjunction with Karnataka Government officials of different departments in order to organize this Health Camp event. Individuals were informed and directed will in advance to escort patients with facial deformities to this camp. In order to spread the word about the camp,  the foundation informed the general public through various medias. 

Corporate have Social Responsibility (CSR) targets to help improve community living. In India,  though the corporates understand their accountability towards the society and are willing to take initiatives for the betterment, it becomes difficult for them to reach the grassroot level.

Face Deformities, also known as Facial Defects are deformities in the growth of the skull and facial bones.  These are congenital deformities (present at birth) and can be corrected by reconstructive surgery. Face Deformities can be Craniofacial Deformities (affecting the skull), Maxillofacial Deformities (affecting the upper jaw) and Dentofacial Deformities (affecting the bony structure and teeth)

While the team had anticipated a problem in convincing patients of the need for surgery, there did not appear to be any such issue. Each person examined was given a diagnosis and a prescription sheet, and some patients were also asked to come into Bangalore for a surgery on a given date.
